Montgomery has a rich country, jazz and blues heritage. The Alabama Jazz Federation, headquartered in Montgomery, is dedicated to preserving and perpetuating jazz and blues in Alabama. One of the federation's biggest events is the annual River Jam, music festival which draws prominent performers from around the country. The group also promotes eight to ten concerts throughout the year and twice-monthly jam sessions. The Jubilee Cityfest, an annual city festival, featuring non-stop music, food and fun is also an annual music event.
On the local nightlife scene, wear your good jeans and boots for two-stepping at The Gambler. On the Wagon, named best live music club in Montgomery by the Montgomery Advertiser, features local regional and national acts. The Keys is a popular nightspot with distinction of frequent performances by Billy Simmon, billed as the “Black Elvis.” For blues, jazz and Cajun bayou ambience, spend an evening at Gator’s. Or, if you just want casual music and friendly southern atmosphere, drop by one the Montgomery’s small pubs like Michael’s or Doodle Hoppers. On the classical side, the Montgomery Symphony performs throughout the year with programs from traditional classical to pops and Broadway scores.
